Weekly Blog

Good morning grade 3 families 🌞

I hope you enjoyed the sunshine over the weekend and managed to get outside.

As you will have seen, this weeks work was posted on Friday afternoon. Please note that this is for you to be able to plan your week ahead, not to complete the work on your weekend.

Students have gotten very good at handing in their work using the Google Classroom platform. If you are still having trouble with this, the link with a  video explaining how to do so can still be found under Classwork.

In addition, I have added links to the music and gym blogs, along with an optional lesson with Mr. Sandberg with some fun coding activities.

Have a fantastic week everyone! I look forward to seeing you all on Thursday morning 😊

Hello Parents and Students!

Hello Parents!

We are thinking about each of your families during this time and hope that everyone is safe and healthy. Today, we wanted to share some learning activities that you can do at home with your children. Many of these activities can be completed independently. Please continue to check the blog, school messengers, and the news daily for updates.

Thank you for your patience and support.

Grade 3 Teachers
Math
  • Please encourage your child to practice skip counting by 2, 3, 5, 10 and 25. Starting at any given number counting forwards and backwards.
    • You can make this a game. For example, “I’m starting at 3, counting forward by 2s. Will I say the number 17?”
  • Practice basic math facts through playing card games
    • You can make this a game of WAR! Pick your operation (adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing), each player chooses a card at the same time and you race to say the answer. The quickest response takes the cards
Reading
  • With the understanding that access to books may be limited at this time, please continue daily reading, when possible, with your child.
  • The following websites are offering free subscriptions for the time being. If you’re interested, follow the links below:
Writing
Get creative, write a story using this story prompt.

Looking down from the Eiffel Tower you notice your bright yellow school bus is pulling away. You wave your arms frantically and scream at the top of your lungs. Sadly you realize you are stranded 81 stories above the ground and you have not learned any French yet.
We would love to read your writing! If you’d like, please share your story with your teacher on google docs! If you require assistance with passwords to access online resources, please feel free to email your teacher.💛💛💛

Weekly Blog

We had a busy week across the curriculum. In mathematics we focused on 3D shapes and students demonstrated a strong understanding after comparing and contrasting, labeling and identifying attributes.

We continued our Design Thinking work that culminated in students building boxcars based on a personal blue print.

To culminate the week, students worked peacefully on a giant Mandala in the gathering space, in front of our new living wall.

We looked closely at interesting verbs to enhance story writing. Students then got creative and wrote endings to suspense filled stories about entering the elevator of the Calgary Tower.

Reminder: There will be no conferences next week as per yesterday's email.

Weekly Blog

We had a very busy week! Students celebrated pink shirt day earlier in the week. Parents will receive an email soon with the winning t-shirt designs for you to vote on.
Our student teacher from MRU worked with students throughout the week on a postcard from the Andes. After reading a story, they used a template to write from the perspective of a tourist attending the Inti Raymi festival.

We visited W.D.Pratt middle school and had fun finding our way around with a grade 4 buddy and playing games in the gym.

We have been illustrating our published copies of our stories and students are excited to share these with you at our celebration of learning.

Students focused on some of the sustainable goals of the United Nations throughout the week. They are gaining ideas for their eventual house designs.

Weekly Blog

This week, students were introduced to the role the UN plays in our world. We then looked further into the sustainable goals. We will continue to take a closer look at some of these goals next week.
We continued to use the Design Thinking model as a lens for The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. This is a story of how one child's vision can positively impact a nation.
Students have been solving and creating word problems based on division and multiplication. Through the building process, they will apply measurement and 3D shape skills to solve problems.

We have begun writing the endings to our Peruvian fairytales. Our next steps will be typing them up on the computers and beginning the editing process.

A pink form went home for students who would like to participate in the pink shirt day design competition. During that day we will be participating in lessons and activities that promote kindness and acceptance.

Students who would like to give cards to their classmates for Valentine's Day will have the opportunity to do so on Wednesday, Feb 12th. Please do not bring in food items to share and be sure to include all students in the class. A list will go home with interested students on Monday.

Weekly Blog

Students had a great time reading with their buddies in their pajamas on literacy day last Monday.

Students have continued to use the CUBES method to solve a variety of division problems. They are making the connection between their knowledge of times tables and how that can help them with division.

We have been using the Design Thinking Model as a lens for looking at the story, Ada's Violin. This is a story of ingenuity in a seemingly hopeless city of Paraguay. Using materials found in the dump, instruments for an orchestra are built and young children, including Ada, learn to play. Students empathized, identified the problem and how ideation transformed this community.

Throughout the week, students took part in a series of science experiments that will give them the building blocks for their future project where they will be designing and building prototypes of homes. They learned about forces, arches, towers and joins.

Students continue to work on their Peruvian Fairy Tales. They are stretching out the action in the middle of their stories, adding the thoughts and feelings of the characters, dialogue and lots of descriptions.

Reminder: Literacy Day is on Monday. Students can wear their
PJs and bring a stuffy.

Studio Bell Field Trip
Students gave the Studio Bell field trip a 10 out of 10. During our sessions with our tour guide, one student giddily shared that it was the best day of her life! Everything from hands on work with instruments, to listening to the big movie organ and exploring the displays made the trip outstanding. Thank you to all the parent helpers for your support.

Math
In math we combined art and math perimeter to create and measure interesting Peruvian carpet designs. We also continued to work on division and multiplication.

Writing
Students are continuing to work on their Peruvian Fairy Tales. They are working hard on writing exciting beginnings and descriptive language.

Inquiry
Student are being introduced to design thinking through reading literature that models this format. Yesterday we read the book One Plastic Bag. We used this story to introduce some of the concepts in design thinking.
